The Bible Recap

Bible in One Year Chronological Reading Plan

I never thought I would read through the Bible in 1 year, seemed far too daunting and frankly I had no desire to read the “boring” early Old Testament books (e.g. Leviticus, Numbers) in their entirety. But then my church recommend The Bible Recap devotional reading plan at the beginning of 2024. I gave it a shot, and wow, I’m glad I did. I’ve done different  Bible in a Year plan a few times, but it skipped a several chapters here and there, whereas this one hits every single verse.

I do The Bible Recap on the Bible App, but you can also chose to follow the devotional plan by their book, Youtube page, or podcast site.

There’s multiple aspects that make The Bible Recap different, especially when completed on the Bible App, where all the videos are linked.

1) On the Bible App, there are accompanying videos from The Bible Project that summarize each book of the Bible before your start reading. These illustrated short videos briefly discuss the author of the book, summarize the book, discuss the main themes, etc., which helps you go into the book with some frame of reference.

2)The reading plan is set up in chronological order. Instead of just reading the Bible straight through. Reading the Bible in chronological order, makes a world of difference, as you can more easily follow along with the stories of the Bible.

3) And for my favorite feature — the author of The Bible Recap, Tara-Leigh Cobble has a podcast style short video (usually about 8 minutes long) after each day’s reading. In these videos, she recaps the reading, gives cultural and historical context, talks about how it fits into the big picture of the Bible, and shares a “God Shot”. A “God Shot” is where she saw God and/or His character revealed in the text. It’s amazing the way you can see God’s character in “boring” Levitical laws and long genealogies.

The daily readings are usually 3 chapters, which take about 10-15 minutes or so to read, so the readings along with the daily videos can be done in less than 30 minutes.

Before starting the plan or on Day 1, there are a few introduction videos that Tara-Leigh Cobble recommends watching, which talk about the benefit of reading the Bible, how to read the Bible, and explain the plan. I recommend watching the videos. I loved the emphasis they placed on reading the Bible through the correct lenses. We shouldn’t be searching for ourselves in the Bible, but for God. The Bible is not about us — it’s about God.

I’ve told my friends and family about the plan. Many of them have started the plan and love it, I think you would too!

I’m currently reading through the plan my second time! If you have a questions or want to discuss further, please send me a message.
